Orange Chai Mulled Wine Recipe for Cozy Winter Gatherings

A seasonal drink with a chai twist — serve this Orange Chai Mulled Wine at holiday gatherings and impress your guests.

First, apologies to my neighbours who endured me singing on repeat while writing this post. I’ll repay them with a glass (or two) of Orange Chai Mulled Wine.

I’ve been talking and singing to myself more these days — not because I’m drunk, but because I work from home and spend a lot of time alone in my small apartment. Sometimes I take my work outside, but I’m a winter hater who loves her bed, so most days I’m at home. Aside from the repairman who fixed my washing machine (and politely declined mulled wine), I’m usually on my own.

I won’t lie — I enjoy it. I’m an extrovert who values solitude. Still, too much alone time can feel odd, and that often sends me to the kitchen for a warm, comforting drink.

I didn’t post this just to justify a midday tipple — though I admit I indulged a little. While writing, I found myself singing and reflecting on how unconventional my life can be.

My job is unusual. When I tell people I’m a food blogger, the reaction is often, “That’s your job?” I like being different. I write about healthy food and also share cocktail recipes. I’ll reach for a kale salad and then pour myself a glass of wine — calories and carbs be damned.

There are times I question those differences and wonder if a conventional 9-to-5 would be easier. But this is my blog and my journey, and I want this space to reflect who I am. As Oscar Wilde said, “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.”

  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle red wine, I used Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 clementine oranges, peeled and juiced (or other small oranges)*
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 12 cardamom pods
  • 1 tsp freshly grated ginger

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a pot and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes. Do not let the mixture boil.
  2. Remove from heat and let rest for 10–15 minutes before serving. The longer it sits, the more the flavors develop.

Notes

*Tear the orange peels into small pieces before adding. This recipe is moderately sweet; add more honey if you prefer it sweeter.
