Local Beauty
The northwest area of the Big Island is known as the Kohala (pronounced Ko-HA-la) coast. This is where Hale Ahonui is located. The Kohala Coast showcases a broad cross section of Hawaii’s best features. The southern stretch is home to world-class beaches, resorts, and golf courses, while the northern end includes charming towns like Hāwī (Ha-VEE) and Kapaʻau (Kapa-OW). In those towns, the countryside of traditional Hawaii remains largely unchanged.
Nestled between the wind-swept slopes of Kohala Mountain to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Hale Ahonui sits on grassy meadows reminiscent of the Kansas Flint Hills. It’s a striking landscape that contains many unique things to do on the Big Island.

Local Abundance
With landscapes similar to the Flint Hills, the Big Island produces a large share of Hawaii’s beef. Recently there’s been a stronger focus on locally grown food: year-round growing conditions, rich ocean harvests, and expansive pastures support this shift. An estimated portion of the island’s cattle now goes to local consumption, reflecting that trend.
The Kohala Coast is a food lover’s paradise. Fresh fish—Mahi Mahi, Ahi, and Opakapaka—come straight off the boats at the Kawaihae (Ka-WHY-hi) harbor. Local fruits include white pineapple, dragon fruit, guava, and passion fruit. You’ll also find macadamia-fed pork from nearby Parker Ranch. In coming posts I will share recipes that help you recreate this bounty at home.
Elevation on the Kohala Coast ranges from about 120 feet above sea level at the Akoni Pule highway to roughly 5,400 feet at the summit of Kohala Mountain. That variety creates diverse climates and terrain, from coastal warmth to cool upland breezes. Panoramic views stretch over the Pacific to the west and include Hualalai, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea to the south, and Kohala Mountain to the northeast.
Hale Ahonui
Hale Ahonui sits on a three-acre lot at about 1,000 feet elevation, giving an average temperature near 73°F. Daytime highs can reach the low 80s, while evenings often dip into the mid-60s. We chose this elevation for both the temperatures and the panoramic views.
I first discovered the Kohala Coast while researching vacation ideas years ago. After ruling out destinations that were too hot or too uncertain, a photo of this landscape captured my attention and I booked a trip. During that visit a realtor mentioned the lot; we purchased it on the spot.
