Our Favorite Oogie Boogie Dessert

We celebrate both Halloween and Christmas themes all year long, and our family is especially fond of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Jack and Sally are iconic, but Oogie Boogie inspired this playful dessert.

This trifle honors Oogie Boogie with layers of chocolate cake chunks, a neon-green cheesecake-style mousse, crushed cookies for texture, and gummy worms for creepy-crawly fun.

It’s simple to assemble and perfect for a movie night or Halloween party — kids and adults both love it.

How to Make a Halloween Trifle

This Oogie Boogie trifle comes together quickly if you have everything ready. The process is mainly layering, so gather your ingredients and a clear trifle bowl or individual cups.

Prepare the cake: Bake a chocolate cake from a box mix or your favorite recipe. Allow it to cool, then cut into bite-sized cubes.

Make the green mousse: Combine instant white chocolate or vanilla pudding mix with milk according to the amount in the ingredient list. Fold in Cool Whip until smooth, then tint with neon green food coloring until you reach the desired shade. Chill briefly if needed.

Assemble: Spoon one-quarter of the pudding mixture into the bottom of the trifle dish. Add one-third of the cake cubes, then sprinkle one-third of the crushed Oreos and a few gummy worms. Repeat the layers until you reach the top.

Finish: Spread the remaining pudding mixture over the top, sprinkle with the last of the crushed cookies, and arrange gummy worms for decoration. Refrigerate until serving.

Recipe Tips

Cake layer: Use a boxed mix, a homemade cake, or a plain bakery cake. Chocolate works best for contrast, but feel free to choose your favorite flavor.

Green filling: The filling is a pudding-cheesecake-style mousse made from instant pudding mix and Cool Whip. Use instant (not cook-and-serve) pudding to ensure the mousse sets properly. Vanilla or white chocolate pudding works well. Pistachio pudding can be used if you prefer its natural green color.

Fun additions: Gummy worms or gummy bugs are perfect for the theme. You can also add chocolate candies, candy bugs, or spooky sprinkles.

Individual halloween trifle cups

Make Them Individual Serving Size

Individual cups are a great option for parties. Layer a little pudding mixture, followed by crushed cookies and cake pieces. Repeat until the cup is full and top with gummy worms. Individual portions are festive and easy to serve.

Serving dish: A clear dish shows the layers beautifully. Choose a traditional elevated trifle bowl or clear plastic cups for individual servings.

Making Ahead, Storing + Serving

Make ahead: You can assemble the trifle a day in advance, but avoid preparing it too early because the pudding will gradually soak into the cake and make it soggy. If you want to prepare components ahead of time, store them separately and assemble before serving.

Leftovers: Store covered in the refrigerator for a few days. The texture may soften as it sits, but the trifle remains flavorful.
