If you want to make this refreshing water, hurry to the store and grab any fresh cranberries you can find. Stores often discount cranberries after the holidays, and they freeze very well. Rinse the berries, remove any soft ones, and freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer them to a zip-top bag to keep for muffins, loaves, or this detox water.

You can add cranberries to recipes straight from the freezer. They chop easily for baking or can be halved for adding directly to this apple cranberry detox water.

After the holiday rush, many of us want to reset: eat more moderately, save wine for special occasions, and reduce sugar. Drinking more water is an important part of that reset, and flavored water makes it much easier. This recipe combines apples, lemons, and cranberries for a tasty, healthful drink.

Green apples contain enzymes and organic acids that support digestion and can help the liver. Cranberries are rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients; they support urinary tract health and can act as a natural diuretic to help flush excess water and toxins. Lemons provide vitamin C and help stimulate the liver and digestion. If you can find Meyer lemons, they add a slightly sweeter, milder lemon flavor that works beautifully here.

Kitchen Frau Notes: If possible, choose organic green apples and organic lemons. Since the goal is to detox, starting with produce that has lower pesticide residues helps avoid adding extra toxin stress to your system.

Apple Cranberry Detox Water

  • 2 litres/quarts filtered water
  • 1 small green apple (for example, Granny Smith)
  • 1 lemon (Meyer lemons are especially nice if available)
  • ½ cup fresh or frozen cranberries

Fill a large jug with the filtered water.

Cut the apple into wedges and remove the core. Thinly slice the apple wedges and the lemon; thinner slices release more flavor. Remove any seeds from the lemon slices, then add the apple and lemon to the water.

Cut half of the cranberries in half crosswise; the others can stay whole. Cranberries contain tiny seeds that may float or sink but are not noticeable when drinking. Add the halved and whole cranberries to the jug.

Refrigerate and let the mixture steep overnight to develop flavor. Serve over plenty of ice. You can strain out the fruit before serving, or leave it in and offer a straw and a spoon so guests can sip the water and nibble the fruit.

Makes about 2 litres.

Guten Appetit!
