Beach Crab Snacks: Coastal Appetizer Ideas and Serving Tips

My boys are counting down the days until our trip to Tybee Island, so we made this fun Crab on the Beach Snack for my 3-year-old. He absolutely loved it and it’s incredibly simple to prepare—an easy, healthy way to make snack time playful and encourage little ones to eat more fruit.

Summer Beach Crab Fruit Snack

Crab on the Beach Snack

Even though school is back in session, our family still plans beach trips in September—so summer is far from over for us. This snack is ideal for toddlers and a great method to add more fresh fruit to their plates. It’s one of my 3-year-old’s favorite treats and it’s quick to assemble, making it perfect for busy mornings or an after-nap nibble.

What You’ll Need

  • Cheerios (for the sandy beach)
  • 1 Pretzel stick (for the palm tree trunk)
  • 1 Kiwi (sliced for palm leaves)
  • 1 Large strawberry (for the crab body and claws)
  • Pineapple chunks (for the sun)
  • 2 Baby carrots (for additional decoration or sandcastle pieces)
  • 1 Raisin (for the crab’s pupils)
  • 1 Pretzel rod (optional extra trunk or decoration)

How To Make A Crab Fruit Snack

  • Slice the large strawberry in half to create the crab’s body.
  • Arrange one strawberry half on a blue or light-colored plate to represent water.
  • Use the other half to cut small pieces for the crab’s claws, legs, eyes, and mouth. A small paring knife works well for detailed cuts.
  • Halve the raisin and place the tiny pieces on the eye shapes as pupils.
  • Scatter Cheerios along the bottom of the plate to resemble sand.
  • Slice the kiwi into thin wedges and use a pretzel stick or pretzel rod as the trunk to create a simple palm tree beside the crab.
  • Slice the baby carrots if desired for extra decoration, and arrange pineapple chunks as a bright sun on the plate.
